The downtown art museum is free Saturday, thanks to Nissan, which is sponsoring the day as a way to tie in with the Nashville Cherry Blossom Festival downtown by offering a free look at the Frist exhibition “Looking East: Western Artists and the Allure of Japan.”
Then Sunday, the Frist is having a free Family Festival Day, which is all about Japan. Visitors can investigate the rich traditions of art-making and culture in a daylong celebration of the “Looking East” exhibit.
You can learn how Western artists such as Vincent van Gogh and Mary Cassatt were influenced by Japanese culture and how it changed their art.
There will be lots of hands-on activities such as designing a fish print, creating a kimono or making a scroll painting.
Hours are 10 a.m.-5:30 p.m. Saturday and 1-5:30 p.m. Sunday. See www.fristcenter.org/familyday for more information.
